Two electric vehicle startups show off their new vehicles at the New York International Auto Show, revealing that when it comes to EVs, the playing field is open to new participants.
In among the electric debuts from Chrysler, Nissan and Toyota were two other companies: Deus and Indi. Deus showed off its Vayenne all-electric supercar while Indi displayed its more mainstream model, the Indi One.
While neither company may produce more than a few dozen vehicles or they produce millions, it shows that electrification is opening up the industry to new players and new ideas. That being said, neither of the two nascent EV makers in NYC are likely to impact the auto industry the way Tesla has.
Super fast and super powerful
The bigger splash of the two was made by Deus with the introduction of its Vayanne all-electric supercar, which came with an impressive design and eye-popping performance numbers. The company predicts the car will produce more than 2,200 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque.
The result is a top speed of more than 248 mph with a 0-62 mph time of — wait for it — less than 1.99 seconds. If the company delivers on these numbers, it would be the fastest car — in terms of 0-to-60 — on the planet right now.
The Austrian EV startup says it will build just 99 of the battery-electric beasts with deliveries starting in 2025. Pricing information wasn’t released.
Not just about speed
“At Deus, design is not merely about the looks, it is an integrated concept that reflects the marque’s main credo: to effortlessly combine exquisite design and functionality with cutting-edge technology in the EV hypercar segment,” said Adrian-Filip Butuca, head of design at Deus.
“To showcase this harming, we chose to stylize the Vayanne around the idea of symmetry and geometric alignment of its lines and design features.”
The company, which began in Vienna, Austria in 2020, is working with Williams Advanced Engineering as well as Italdesign, two well-known names in the performance vehicle world. As a result, the new model aims to go super fast while feeling like a luxury vehicle on the inside.
However, the company said the Vayanne features a green interior, although it uses leather for the seats, it claims it was “treated and produced combining sustainable, technologically advanced solutions throughout the production process, with strong commitment to zero waste for a circular economy model.”

While Deus was showing what EVs are most famous for — speed — another, Indi EV, was demonstrating another thing EV startups are well-known for: preorders and reservations. In Indi’s case, a $100 reservation gets you a ticket for the company’s Indi One EV, introduced earlier this year.
It’s not quite the rocket the Vayanne is with a 0-to-60 mph time of 6.75 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph; however, the price starts at just $45,000 and it’s eligible for the federal tax credit of $7,500. A Premium edition of the vehicle starts at $69,000, officials noted.
For each preorder, the EV maker is offering a “unique gift package” based on the color the buyer chooses. Additionally, the company says its donating a portion of every presale or reservation to “local community sustainability initiatives.”
Available only in the U.S. and Canada right now, deliveries are expected to being at some point next year.
What you get for $100
The four-door crossover reports a range of 230 miles — at the lower end of the current standard for long-range EVs — and 275 hp and about 300 lb-ft of torque from a single motor on the rear axle. It features a 75 kWh battery and charging at 100 kw on a DC charger.
However, the Premium model is powered by a 95 kWh battery capable of a 300-mile range and producing 470 horsepower and 730 NM of torque for a top speed of 130 miles per hour. It as has a 0-60 mph time of just 4.2 seconds.
Not fast a foot, but quick to change
The Indi’s selling point is not necessarily speed or handling, but instead it offers owners a chance at a level of instant customization not available with other vehicles.
“The future of smart mobility is in lockstep with the progression of Web3. Consumers today expect their vehicles to come with the required technology and equipment to intuitively adapt to their needs and interests,” said Andre Hudson, head of design, Indi EV.
“For some, that means playing podcasts and issuing basic voice commands. For others, it means VR gaming and live streaming. Indi One is revolutionary because it’s not just a mode of transportation; it was designed from the ground-up to be a technology platform to help you live a better life.”
The Indi One gives drivers the freedom to customize their vehicle in a variety ways, such changing the sound of the horn, building a dog gate in the trunk, or tuning the vehicle to become the ultimate mobile content creation. Creating a space that learns, responds to, and fits your needs: it’s the embodiment of Indi EV’s “You Do You” philosophy, officials said.
Not only that, its Vehicle Integrated Computer, or VIC, allows third-party developers to further enhance the vehicle. The VIC is also designed to accommodate high-end gaming and offers an array of media hardware and services, including a virtual assistant.
