After teasing us for months, Honda has finally unveiled the 2023 Civic Type R. Honda says that the new Civic Type R is the most powerful model in the Type R’s 30-year history, which also means that it’s the “fastest, most powerful Honda-branded vehicle ever offered in the U.S.”
Just like the standard Civic hatchback, the new Civic Type R has toned down styling that makes it look more sophisticated and grown up compared to the “boy racer” looks of the last generation. The new Civic Type R is longer, lower and wider than before. It stands out from the standard version with its flared fenders, more aggressive front fascia, side sills, wider rear doors, a large rear spoiler and a sportier rear bumper with three round exhaust outlets and a rear diffuser.
When the 2023 Civic Type R arrives, it will be available in five colors: Historic Championship White, Rallye Red, Racing Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl and Sonic Grey Pearl.
While Honda says that the new Civic Type R is more powerful than the last generation, Honda has not released the specs for the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. Honda just says that the engine is now “more powerful and responsive” while its mated to an improved six-speed manual transmission and rev-matching system. Honda also updated the suspension and steering.
Inside the Type R shows off with its red seats with a suede-like fabric. The digital gauge cluster also gets a new +R driving mode meter that shows a graphic engine rpm display, rev indicator lights and gear position. The Honda LogR data logger also retains real-time information on the Type R’s performance from the driver’s input.
“Type R is about more than speed, power and handling. It’s how a great car makes you feel that really matters and that’s what the all-new Civic Type R is all about,” stated Mike Kistemaker, assistant, vice president of Honda sales at American Honda.
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R will arrive this fall. We can’t wait to see how it stacks up against its newest rival, the Toyota GR Corolla.
